Position Summary

 

The Math Instructor is responsible for the planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom and related activities, including, but not limited to; instruction, instructional counseling, academic advising, serving on various committees, and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations. The instructor is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on any Coastal Alabama Community College campus as assigned. The Instructor must adhere to the general faculty guidelines as specified by the College Policies and Procedures Manual, Department policies and procedures, the Dean of Academic Instruction, and the Alabama Community College System Board of Trustees. 

Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System Salary Schedule D1 (9 months).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:

  1. Develops curriculum, plans and organizes program courses in coordination with other department instructors, appropriate Division Chair, Director, and/or Dean of Academic Instruction to ensure compliance with curriculum. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to; Ensures that assigned classes are held as scheduled; Plans each unit or lesson, both as to content and method, to make each class minute meaningful; Organizes each course taught into an effective instrument of learning; Studies and utilizes the characteristics of the students in each class in order to facilitate the best teaching and learning situations; Maximizes the learning opportunities for each student; and Utilizes proficiency with virtual meeting and presentation formats for class meetings, as well as College meetings, as needed.
  2. Effectively teaches lecture and/or lab (if applicable) courses as needed courses in the day, evening, or on weekends on any Coastal Alabama Community College campus or work site.
  3. Assists in implementing College policies, objectives, and functions in accordance with College philosophy and procedures including, but not limited to; Conducts class evaluations and completing other College evaluations in accordance with College policy; Posts and maintains office hours for student consultations; Files an appropriate course syllabus and/or course outline with the Division Chair, Departmental Director, and/or Dean of Academic Instruction for each course taught; Submits all required reports, keeping accurate class rolls, and submits attendance verification as required to the appropriate administrative personnel; and Holds the final exam at the designated time scheduled according to the Final Exam schedule.
  4. Keeps students informed about their progress through the prompt grading of papers, projects, skill assessments, and other work. Responds to student communication within 24 hours Monday through Friday.
  5. Recommends textbooks and other instructional materials including classroom and laboratory equipment (if applicable) to Division Chairs, including, but not limited to; participating in the College’s library collection of development by selecting, evaluating, and weeding library resources in each appropriate discipline.
  6. Works closely with the appropriate Division Chair on the development of annual Division budgets for approval by the Director and/or Dean.
  7. Serves as an academic advisor to assigned students.
  8. Completes Early Alert Reports and refers students to Student Development Office.
  9. Assists with College registrations and recruitment and retention of students.
  10. Satisfactorily completes Distance Education Certification (DEC) at Coastal Alabama before or by the end of the first semester of employment.
  11. Remains active at a high level of expertise in the subjects taught and stimulating enthusiasm for those subjects by keeping informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities. Strives for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the College. Makes suggestions to the Division Chair, the Instructional Affairs Committee, the Departmental Director, and/or the Dean concerning the improvement of the curriculum in keeping with the objectives of the College.
  12. Attends all faculty meetings, College assemblies, professional development, orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the President, Dean of Academic Instruction, Departmental Director, or Division Chair. Remains actively involved in the co-curricular activities of the College.

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications 

  1. Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  2. Eighteen (18) graduate semester credit hours in any combination of the qualifying fields: Mathematics; Applied Mathematics; Mathematical Sciences; or Statistics.
  3. Effective oral and written communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated flexibility in handling diverse course loads.
  5. Ability to traverse to teach on multiple campuses.

 Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in teaching Calculus.
  2. Teaching experience at the postsecondary level.
  3. Experience in writing curriculum for online instruction.
  4. Experience teaching distance education courses.
  5. An understanding of and commitment to the philosophy and mission of a comprehensive community college.
  6. Commitment to all students and faculty including those of diverse cultures and ethnic backgrounds.
  7. An understanding of the broad range of students' abilities in an open admissions college and the ability to communicate to the community college student population.
  8. Proven successful teaching experience at the community college level.
  9. Experience in multimedia presentation of classroom lectures and laboratory activities.
  10. Demonstrated speaking and writing skills.
