The Poverello House is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has been serving the homeless, poor, and hungry of Fresno Since 1973, when its founder, Mike McGarvin, began handing out sandwiches on the street. Today the organization provides three meals a day, 365 days a year, to anyone in need; groceries to families; medical and dental care; shower and laundry services; transportation for medical reasons; clothing; day shelter; mail services; and other supportive social services. We are looking for a Human Resources Manager to lead and oversee all HR related functions within the organization. Under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the HR Manager will serve as the link between management and employees by handling questions, developing and interpreting policies, and helping to resolve work related issues.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Advise managers on organizational policy matters, such as equal employment opportunity and sexual harassment, and recommend changes as necessary.
- Perform difficult staffing duties, including dealing with understaffing, refereeing disputes, firing employees, and administering disciplinary procedures.
- Work with the Executive Team to identify staff vacancies, develop job descriptions, recruit, interview, and select quality candidates for the organization.
- Plan, direct, supervise, and coordinate work activities of subordinates and staff relating to employment, compensation, labor relations, and employee relations.
- Provide current and prospective employees with information about policies, job duties, working conditions, wages, opportunities for promotion, and employee benefits.
- Drive the onboarding process including new employee orientation, signing up for applicable benefits, completing hiring paperwork, and be the direct contact for all employees moving forward.
- Ensure that new HR requirements are being followed, review the employee handbook annually, and ensure that all HR legalities are being followed in all organizational functions.
- Support employees with benefits information, including medical, retirement, and other available benefits.
- Ensure that Human Resources consulting is accessed when legal or other HR policy input is required.
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, HR, or related field (experience may be substituted for education).
- At least 2 years of experience in Human Resources, preferably in a management position.
- Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written, including proficiency in MS Office Suite and Outlook.
- Ability to multi-task and work well under pressure, both independently and with guidance.
- Reliable transportation, insurance coverage and valid driver’s license.
- Professional certification in human resources preferred. (APHR, PHR, SHRM-CP).
- Experience with non-profit organizations and/or knowledge of the unhoused community is desirable.
