Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Business Manager I for the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT). Reporting to the Executive Director of the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation (CAIT), the Business Manager I will work independently with minimal supervision within broadly defined work objectives of the Center’s programs. The role of this position is to provide senior level management and leadership for the day-to-day operations of the entire Center, with primary focus on fiscal planning, budget management, administrative staff supervision, proposals development and facilities.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Serving as the Business Manager for the entire CAIT Center, this position will be the primary business contact for the Center management, in particular for the Director and Executive Director, by overseeing the administration of programs, projects, and/or processes and by organizing and coordinating unit operations.
  • This individual is responsible for managing daily operations encompassing a wide range of business activities including but not limited for: contract negotiations, subcontract compliance, budget, accounting, grant administration, compliance, and finance.
  • Administers multiple facets of programs, projects, and/or processes. All faculty and staff will report to this individual for financial and business matters for the entire Center. This individual will have top level approval authority on endorsements, purchases, payroll, and agreements.
  • Oversee external funding opportunities that closely align with and support the center’s goals and objectives.
  • Providing essential services and support to faculty and staff developing and writing proposals to federal agencies, state agencies and foundations, while securing external support for their research, training, and public service programs.
  • Assisting faculty submitting high quality, fully compliant proposals on-time with a greater chance of being funded.
  • This individual must have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills and be knowledgeable of persuasion techniques.
  • This individual is responsible for overseeing the contract negotiations, purchase of equipment, supplies, and services of a high dollar, complex nature for the Center programs. Authority to negotiate contracts and agreements.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance or a related field with five years relevant experience in a higher education or research setting and/or increasing functional responsibility in a high-level leadership/managerial role that demonstrates excellent communication skills in addition to comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general business/financial/accounting/contracting principles and practices.

  • Requires professional experience in a public and/or corporate purchasing/contract negotiating environment.
  • Experience in higher education environment is required, knowledge of the university environment, and computing systems are critical.
  • Strong oral and writing skills.

  • Ability to operate effectively and efficiently in a self-directed and self motivated environment.
  • Ability to prioritize the work of self and others in a dead-line oriented environment.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Requires a high degree of professionalism and tactfulness.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous interactions with transportation funding agencies; SNJDOT, FHWA, and USDOT is highly valued.
  • Strong supervisory skills.
  • High degree of professionalism and tactfulness. Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills and highly valued knowledge of the university environment, and computing.
  • Proven ability to operate effectively and efficiently in a self-directed and self-motivated environment; and ability to prioritize the work of self and others in a dead-line oriented environment.
