Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking an Assistant Director of Business Services and Program Manager for the School of Social Work (SSW). The Assistant Director will play a central role in the administration and coordination of human resources programs and policies for staff and faculty of the school which includes more than more than 500 full and part-time employees. SSW is a spirited School, committed to a positive workplace culture engaging liberatory consciousness practices. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to serve on SSW and University committees, develop processes and tools in partnership with SSW senior leadership, and work closely with inspiring and highly skilled leaders across different parts of the University.  
Reporting to the Director of Business Services, the Assistant Director is responsible for the daily operations as it relates to human resources programs within the SSW
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Develops and implements programming in support of staff development that includes mentoring, coordination of skills training for communities of practice, and other professional development endeavors in consultation with the SSW Staff Council and the IIDEA (Inclusion, Intersectionality, Diversity, Equity, and Advancement) Committee.  
  • Provides leadership, supervisory orientation, and timely, accurate and strategic counsel to staff managerial officers throughout the school’s units and faculty when needed, independently implementing personnel policies and procedures, establishing department/unit staffing hiring reviews for forward planning.   
  • Manages certain processes for reappointment of non-tenure track faculty and oversees the Part Time Lecturer/Coadjutant appointment & reappointment process.   
  • Oversees continuous and new regulatory HR compliance matters.   
  • Primary decision-maker for salary negotiations of staff compensation, working directly with University Human Resources and Office of University Labor Relations and SSW management and hiring officers on contractual/bargaining unit matters and university policy, in alignment with regulatory and statutory employment guidelines.   
  • Supervises the work of the SSW HR Administrative Coordinator.   
  • Serves as the school’s HR approver for new hires and reappointments and Authorizer I approver for Class 1 faculty/staff job postings.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in human resource management or a related field.
  • At least 5 years directly related experience of increasing responsibility in a leadership or managerial role that demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of human resources administration and development, including current and emerging issues in a higher education environment.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills and the ability to write, and edit with a high level of computer literacy.
  • Ability to work in a fast—paced environment.
  • Able to independently exercise sound judgement.
  • Experience implementing and applying inclusionary (or DEI) practices.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree preferred (human resource management or a related field).
  • Extensive working knowledge of university systems such as HCM, ROCS, etc.
  • Ability to work in a confidential setting with tight deadlines while maintaining morale and productivity within a small team.
Equipment Utilized
  • Requires the regular use of a Windows computer and expertise with the following software: Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access).
  • Ability to work with database systems and any current and future technology needed to support the role, hybrid and virtual work and ability to collect, interpret and analyze data utilizing university systems and software for reporting purposes.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing.
  • No special vision requirements.
  • Lifting up to 25lbs.
Special Conditions
  • Occasionally must attend evening or weekend events, or visit other SSW locations in Newark, Camden, and other remote office locations.
