About the Department

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies is in the NC State College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Department manages major and minor programs in the disciplines of philosophy and religious studies; it offers a wide range of courses in these fields to students across the university, with enrollments of over 16,000 credit hours each year; and it manages several minor programs in fields related to philosophy and religious studies. It is active in scholarly research, has twenty tenure-track faculty, eleven professional track faculty, and two administrative staff.

Essential Job Duties

The Business Services Coordinator (BSC) position is responsible for creating and implementing budget plans for their departments. These plans include all aspects of spending in the departments including teaching salaries, non-teaching and staff salaries, graduate assistantships, temporary labor, overload payments, summer salaries, and the various components of the operating budgets for state appropriations, state receipts, and Education Technology Fee funds.

The department’s Business Services Coordinator (BSC) position is also responsible for monitoring all other funding sources in the department including appropriated receipts, enhancement funds, endowments, grants, F&A (overhead), and trust funds. This includes coordinating with the Head, scheduling officer, and any other administrators in the department that impact hiring and expenditures and accounting for all expenses in the budgetary planning process. The BSC updates and reconciles the spending plan on a monthly basis and meets with department and college administration on a routine basis to review the plan.

The Business Services Coordinator (BSC) position is responsible for the initiation of HR actions for their departments. The BSC enters the additional compensation actions into the system and submits all other HR requests to the HR Specialist in college HR Services that supports their department. HR submissions are accomplished via CPAWS, a system developed by college IT to facilitate workflow management of HR actions between departments and the college. Similarly, the BSC submits financial actions to the Accountant in college Financial Services that support their department. The BSC routinely consults and partners with the college business services staff to promote effective and efficient HR and financial services in their department.

Other Responsibilities

  • Assigning office keys;
  • Surplusing defunct furniture and office equipment;
  • Assigning office space;
  • Planning and coordinating meetings and events that require food service and catering;
  • Reporting repair requests to facilities;
  • Scheduling conference rooms;
  • Assisting department head with additional responsibilities.

Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of HR and financial systems, such as PeopleSoft; previous experience as an administrator with similar responsibilities to the BSC.
